Unplanned Pregnancy Counseling and Support

The moment that positive plus sign or even the word pregnant comes across that test strip is life-changing. Maybe not always in the way you had planned either. That is the truth when it comes to an unplanned pregnancy, and now it can feel like your world has flipped upside down. Change and the unknown are scary but there is hope.

We here at Adoption Choices of Reno want to do our best to make sure we provide you with information. We know this change can make it seem like you are swimming in choices and thoughts. It’s why we put together a list of options for you to look over. When it comes to your unplanned pregnancy counseling and support, there are two amazing things you can find no matter what your situation is.

Why Counseling?

There are plenty of reasons that you might want to look into counseling. One of the biggest reasons is the lack of support you may have. Maybe your family isn’t understanding or you just don’t have anyone that really gets what you are going through right now.

Here are some more reasons to look into counseling:

  • You are unsure of how to make a decision about your pregnancy

  • You do not have a strong support system

  • You don’t always feel comfortable talking to loved ones about your pregnancy

  • You are experiencing symptoms of depression or need help sorting through your feelings

  • You are feeling lost in the shuffle of everything

All these feelings are valid and, if you are feeling any of them, it might be a good reason to consider getting some counseling.

What to Look for in Counseling

Now that you’ve made the choice to find counseling. it is important to find the right fit for you. Above all, though, make sure that you aren’t getting the wrong information. Sadly, there are places out there that will give you false information to pressure you into one decision or another.

The place you find should meet a few criteria to know that they are legit:

  • They are certified and licensed. This will be one key thing to look for. If they are missing these criteria, then move on. They will not be worth your time if they are missing these qualifications.

  • Relevant Experience. To have your needs met, look for someone who has had experience in this field. Having someone that has worked with an unplanned pregnancy helps them understand what you are going through. They can provide better information as they are informed about the options and places you can go to.

  • Trustworthy. Can you trust them? Go with your gut on this one. If you feel you can’t just talk to them, then it isn’t the right fit for you. You need to be able to talk openly about what is going on in your head without feeling judged.

Once you know what to look for, you can think about where to go to find them.

Where to Find Counseling and Support

There are many options about where to find a good counselor. Each one will provide you with information based on your needs. It really comes down to the fit for you and cost at times. There is no right or wrong answer as to where to go for counseling, though. If you feel like at any point the choice is no longer right for you, that is perfectly okay. You are more than allowed to change your mind about what you want for you and your baby.

Here are some of the places you can find counseling.

  • Pregnancy Centers: There are many centers all around that are willing to talk to you about your options. One that is all over the United States is Advice & Aid. They will have all the options and will be able to answer questions you have.

  • Counseling Centers: Maybe you are already in counseling. If this is the case, bring up your decision to place your baby for adoption to your counselor and talk about it. They should know you and, while they may not have the training to help right away, they should be able to help you find someone who does.

  • Adoption Agencies: We may know a thing or two about this one. Specifically here at Adoption Choices of Reno there are counselors that you can talk to. As well as people around the clock who are willing to answer your questions. A qualified adoption agency be it non-profit or otherwise should have a number you can call. From there, someone is there to help guide you through your pregnancy journey.

  • Abortion Clinics: All abortion clinics should be staffed with people who are there to help you with your choice. Most states require you to go through counseling before even considering an abortion. If you chose to go to one, and they do not offer you counseling or you feel bullied into getting an abortion, leave. A quality clinic will never pressure you but help you come up with a choice on your own.

Counseling is a great way to get help, but some people don’t want the one-on-one or want something more than that. A little extra support from someone in the same shoes can work wonders. Honestly, sometimes all you need is a friend and that is where support groups come in.

This can be online support groups from a variety of platforms. Facebook is a great place to find people that have or are going through the same thing you are. There are also in person groups that can be seen. From local communities or counseling centers. No matter what you find, the groups are there to support you on your journey.

Unplanned Pregnancy Counseling and Support

Having an unplanned pregnancy can make you feel like you’re out of control. With a little help from others, though, the control can be back in your hands. You don’t have to do this alone. You can have a hand to hold as you go through this journey -- be it from an agency or a support group.

Everything is going to be okay, just take a deep breath. Take a few moments to collect yourself. It will all work out in the end.
